PENDING FEDERAL TAX CREDIT EXPIRATION ACCELERATES PURCHASE DEADLINE FOR SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS IN CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG

Campaign Gains Momentum in First Several Weeks Since Its Community Launch

Charlotte, NC – The opportunity to claim a clean energy Federal Tax Credit has sparked a new accelerated deadline for Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg, a recently launched community-based campaign aimed at making solar energy and battery power more affordable and accessible for all.

Because federal tax credits for residential solar power will expire at the end of 2025, participants in Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg now are highly encouraged to sign a residential contract by Friday, Aug. 8, in order for installations to be completed and giving them the best chance to qualify for a 30% tax credit that can help reduce the total cost of a new solar energy system. That leaves a short window to enroll now to receive a free, no-obligation proposal then make a decision to purchase with a federal tax credit potentially involved.

While signing a contract after August 8th reduces the likelihood of qualifying for the federal tax credit, homeowners may still be able to complete installation in time. Additionally, all participants, regardless of tax credit contract date, will continue to receive group purchase discounts through the Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg program and access to Duke PowerPair program rebates through Oct. 31, 2025. “The Duke PowerPair program does have a capacity limit," said Don Moreland, President of Solar Crowdsource, "but at this time we anticipate capacity to be available through the end of the year..”

“If you have ever considered solar, now is the time to act if a federal tax credit incentive figures significantly into your decision-making,” said Chris Berg, Senior Sales Director from Renu Energy Solutions, the firm selected for the campaign via a careful vetting process. “In addition, the campaign at its heart saves you money through bulk-purchase pricing.”

The overall no-obligation signup deadline for Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenberg remains Oct. 31. Following that the deadline for residential contracts to be signed is Dec. 31, 2025. (Property owners considering a system for their business or non-profit organization through the program have later deadlines due to the time needed to consider a larger-scale system.)

CAMPAIGN GAINS MOMENTUM IN FIRST FEW WEEKS

More than 200 property owners signed up free to receive a solar energy system proposal during the opening weeks of the campaign, which launched officially on June 25. To date, 13 participants rapidly signed contracts to make a purchase. These systems, combined, equal 109.6 kW of renewable energy.

Adding to these homes’ reliability, battery purchases have also been popular with homeowners and accompanied many of these systems. A total of 175.5 kWh in new battery storage has been brought to Charlotte-Mecklenberg through the campaign.

As a community-based group-purchasing program, Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg is based on a “tiered” pricing structure. The more participants who buy a system, the lower the price for all. Those who act early may be eligible to receive a rebate from Renu Energy Solutions at the end of the campaign that makes the final price per watt the same for every buyer.

The unique bulk-buying campaign is the first of its kind in the region and the work of a local partnership forged by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, the Town of Davidson, and Centralina Regional Council.

Interested property owners should go to the program website to learn more about the campaign.
